Acclaimed journalist, Irshad Manji is coming to Halifax on March 1st and she'll be speaking at King's College. This comes on the heels of King's College being labelled as too white by the Commoner. I'm as surprised as anyone that a school steeped in Anglican tradition and that recruits heavily from private schools in central Canada is considered 'too white', what will you say next, that the Jazz Singer isn't an accurate depiction of Black culture?

Having Irshad Manji take some time off from being a pundit for Global seems like as good a move as any to prove that not only is King's College liberal and open because they're willing to have a muslim author speak (and she's queer to boot!), it's also down with American imperialism and the "thrashing of the taliban [which] made millions of Afghanis happy". I won't go on to tell you how important Manji is, because she can do that on her own. Just check out her self congratulatory website

I found this review of her book pretty funny and there's another review here.

You may remember this entry from December 5, 2003:

"In person, Manji has a perky, Peter Pan-takes-on-the-pirates quality. This fits with her prose style, which is argumentative, direct, tightly reasoned and packed with knock-out punches. If you're reading this and thinking, she's every do-gooder who talked too much and was in too many extracurricular clubs in University, you're absolutely right. Manji is pretty much the embodiment of every overly opinionated person you ever met and hated (She probably took the FYP program at King's)."

"In The Trouble With Islam, Manji whips through several thousand years of Islamic history in just under 250 pages. Sometimes the ride is breathtakingly self-absorbed - as well as utterly arrogant. She makes it sound possible for young Muslims like herself to influence the tides of modern Islamic thought, and lead the next generation in gay sex-fueled MTV sing-along.

The Trouble With Islam : A Wake-up Call for Honesty and Tiki Torches will be released in the U.S. and other countries in the new year. "
