Is It Silly to Think This Will Never Happen Again?
Fredericton marked the end of our Maritime tour, we met up with A/V again and played a great show at the Capital.
We showed up in Fredericton early and wandered around in the rain. I love Fredericton because it's pedestrian friendly. There's one hill and that's it, it might as well be a city of moving sidewalks. We met up with Matt Packman's friend Johnny at the Taproom and had a pint. It was at that point that Todd and I again decided to match each other drink for drink. I am unemployed, what else am I going to do? Find work?
We headed over to El Burrito Loco which was like a bizarro version of Mexico Lindo's. Todd and I ordered margaritas. I don't drink margaritas to get drunk, I order them because they're a delicious little pleasure. The margaritas that we received that night were tequila flavoured and overly large. The two of us were feeling buzzed before we paid our bill.
We loaded in at The Capital, set up our nerd gear, and drank vodka and limes while we complained.
The Capital had poop on the wall of its bathroom stall, but was otherwise amazing. I did a 15 minute set which went over so much better than the night before, no heckling and fewer awkward moments. I still have a lot of work to do, but I was reasonably happy with the set and didn't feel like I needed to bury my head in the sand afterwards.
Windom Earle followed next and were visibly tired when they started. Stephan and Greg both had school the past couple of days and have real world committments, I don't so I have marathon naps between shows.
Windom Earle played their best set, the improved sound system benefitted them the most and they had the dancefloor packed. Stephan climbed upon on the stairs and then a speaker during the Kelly Clarkson cover while the rest of the band took a breather, their rest of their set just confirmed why they're one of my favourite bands to see live.
I am going to miss hanging out with Todd, he's one of the most affable guys I've ever met and incredibly supportive. His set on Friday was a lot less agressive than the night before at Gus's and as Jessica said it seemed like he was playing his most accessible music. BoT was sweating it up and giving it his all. The crowd responded in kind. I make him sound like the little engine that could, think more determination and less ABC After School Special. I seem all Pollyanna, I'll shut the fuck up. Great music. Great guy.
Philip's A/V set was pretty much out of this world. He set up on the moon and through a series of satellite relays transmitted his set to the Capital. Philip is a genius I am convinced and the between song banter that he comes up with seems so effortless. He gets the crowd to do crazy shit and I think that's the beauty of an A/V set; seeing just how far Philip can push people. He did a great job setting up the sound and it paid off for everyone.
The show was great so of course something shitty had to happen. I didn't see the entire incident, but some random piece of human detritus started harassing Amanda and Matt telling them he had a 35mm and just generally making them feel uncomfortable. Stephan asked him to leave, he pretended to pull out a gun, and that's when he sucker punched Matt and ran off.
I came out of the Capital, saw Matt not looking so hot, and heard Stephan yelling, so I, like an idiot, chased the guy down an alley. I don't know what I thought I was doing, but I followed him. He ran down a dead end alley, climbed up a snowbank, hopped over a chainlink fence with a 8 foot drop, tried to climb over a wrought iron gate, was stymied, tried to crawl under it, then decided against it, ran across a patio, jumped off the patio, down an alley and then ran into a crowd. He was like the Bionic Man, but only total white trash and a piece of shit and not bionic.
I met up with everyone a few minutes later, they had circled the block looking for me, saw paramedics and thought that something bad had happened to me. I am sure it would have had I tried to confront that guy. I go to the gym, but spend all my time in the steam room.
We saw him later on when we were leaving town. We saw a bunch of guys in an alleyway jostling with each other and someone said "Hey! Look! Bumfights!" and we looked and saw our non-bionic friend about to get punched by some other random. The police drove by and things settled down and we got out of Fredericton, headed to Moncton, stayed at the Holiday Inn, ate waffle fries, came back to Halifax, and said good byes.
