As he stood on the stepladder stacking cans he looked out over the tops of the aisles and surveyed the store. He felt important, like he was David, the grocery manager. He looked for someone to wave to, but none of the cashiers were looking in his direction. It didn't matter. He didn't know any of them well enough to way to them when he wasn't on a stepladder, why would he wave now?

He wondered what it would be like to have to look down at the shelves he normally looked up at. Would he see things on those shelves differently? Would he be more apt to purchase things on this shelve? Would he read those boxes more intently? Would he duck his head when he walked through the doors at work?

He was sure that the old man who smelled like cologne and mouthwash wouldn't complain to him anymore about the avocados being too ripe if he was this tall. He wouldn't dare.

He knew he'd never be that tall. There's some ambitions you can't fulfil.

He wondered if he'd ever know anyone that tall as he stepped off the ladder. Probably not, he thought.

He prayed to God that sleep would visit him soon. It was a last resort after trying everything he could think of to fall asleep. Simply because it was a last resort does not mean that the prayer was insincere, far from it. He felt that praying for sleep was a bit of a trite request. Ashamed, he prayed anyway. He felt that maybe if he was earnest enough with the Lord, that God would grant him this one boon. He had seen movies, Kings did those sorts of things as did Odin in his Thor comics. Maybe calling it a boon was poorly thought out. He hoped that God would forgive his indiscretion and answer his one prayer.

James lay there. He could hear the bad thing happening down the hall. He hated the bad thing and tried desperately not to think of it, it would be over soon. He turned his face into the wall and waited for sleep to come, it didn't.

It was that night that James realized the bible was full of lies and his parents were full of shit.
