The first time I picked up an issue of Punk Planet there were interviews with Los Crudos and the Make-Up. Just reading about those bands made me excited about their music. It was my first exposure to those bands and when I first heard them for real I didn't feel let down.
I've traded, sold, lost, and given away plenty of zines since December 1997, but I've always kept a hold on that issue. The cover is long gone, the second page is almost off, there's creases throughout, and the pages are stained, but still it reamins.
Over the years I've tried submitting a number of short fiction pieces to Punk Planet with a variety of responses : 'Reads too much like a personal essay' (it sure did), 'Thanks' (you're welcome), ' ' (that's not really a response professor). I usually get disheartened, set it aside and forget about what I wrote. A few months later I get the courage to try again and the process starts again.
Recently I sent a piece I was somewhat happy with, it needed some work, but I thought I might as well give it a shot. I waited and waited and eventually they got back to me telling me they honestly liked the piece and if I was willing to do another draft, they'd definitely consider it for publication.
It's nothing set in stone, but it's something and it makes me feel a little bit better that I'm most likely going to fail my 'Social Inequality' exam tonight.
