How is this news?
Carlos Delgado refuses to stand.
The Blue Jays' first basemen, Carlos Delgado, won't stand during God Bless America during games because he disagrees with American foreign policy specifically in regards to the war in Iraq and weapons testing on the island of Vieques.
The reason it isn't a news story is because of this :
Fervently anti-war, Carlos Delgado quietly carried out his personal protest this season, refusing to stand when God Bless America was played at ball parks across the majors.
Most fans never saw him disappearing up the dugout tunnel or staying on the bench. And even teammates who disagreed with the Toronto slugger's political stance accepted his right to call the United States' invasion of Iraq ``the stupidest war ever.''
and this
``This is my personal feeling. I don't want to draw attention to myself or go out of my way to protest,'' Delgado told the Times. ``If I make the last out of the seventh inning, I'll stand there. But I'd rather be in the dugout.''
Delgado isn't showboating and isn't attempting to make an issue out of it nor is he trying to call attention to his protest. It's doubfult that anyone noticed or cared aside from his teammates until reporters attempted to turn it into an issue by contacting Bud Selig and Joe Torre, the New York Yankees manager. Neither of them had any prior knowledge that Delgade wasn't standing during God Bless America, played during the 7th inning stretch at Yankee Stadium in support of U.S. troops, until reporters brought it to their attention.
My feeling is that Delgado will most likely be unjustly crucified and booed by fans in stadiums like New York for being 'anti-american'. Obviously he doesn't support freedom enough...oh wait he's protesting the fact that the U.S. is making an island in his native Puerto Rico completely uninhabitable by testing weapons on it such as depleted uranium. But you wouldn't fucking know all that by just briefly reading the majority of articles that have written on the topic of Carlos Delgado not loving Kate Smith, and God Bless America enough.
