I saw her at church.
The first person, and perhaps only person, I have ever seen get fired. This includes myself.
I knew they were going to fire her from the moment she started her shift. They weren't going to do it at the start of her shift, they wouldn't be able to get a replacement in time. They got a full 8 hours worth of work out of her first. Actually it was just shy of the 8 hour mark. She was fired about a half hour before the end of her regular shift. I'm not sure why they waited so long.
She wailed 'I work like a dog.' Or was it worked like a dog...was she pleading for her job or merely lamenting the needless hours, the wasted days. I looked away. I wished I could subsist and disappear in my pile of dishes
She left and I was told to forget what I had seen and heard by management. It was nothing new. They instructed us once to not speak of an entire day. A flurry of post-it notes was exchanged back and forth throughout the kitchen. It made me feel justified in stealing ice cream from that place.
At the end of my shift I headed home. We passed her walking on the road. We stopped to offer a drive. With tears in her eyes she passed on the offer. I used the old trick of looking just past her. I didn't think she'd want me to see her eyes.
