Stephen Brunt writes in today's Globe and Mail (no link because you need to be a subscriber to access it) about the joy that sports writers seem to be taking in Barry Bonds' admission that he (unknowingly) took steroids. Brunt typifies Bonds as a 'miserable man, a miserable black man' and explains that if you don't think that matters you should pay closer attention to the deaththreats Hank Aaron received as he neared (and later surpassed) Babe Ruth's career homerrun record.
Sportswriters continually love to beat up on Barry Bonds. Contrast their treatment of Bonds with their treatment of Mark McGwire. Mark McGwire gets remembered for bring the fun back to baseball. When it was acknowledge that he was using the performance enhancer, androstenedione, it was treated as a minor scandal, not a big deal, 'aw shucks Mark, we forgive ya! You don't need muscles to hit a homerrun 500 ft, just heart and a beautiful white smile!' Bonds gets remembered as the guy who broke baseball.
Maybe it's deserved, maybe Barry Bonds is just an asshole, but it is troubling that the outrage reserved for Barry Bonds is more vehement than it is/was for Jason Giambi and Mark McGwire.
