Gerry and Holly are the absolute best to go to hockey games with. Any time anyone on the ice is the least bit physical, Gerry yells out, "KILL HIM!" Holly's really good at hearing other people's conversations and pointing out which people are ultra conservative.
Last week we sat by some old biddies who kept referring to Belinda Stronach as a homewrecker. I thought they were top flight idiots, until this week when we sat by the most annoying guy possible. When the Mooseheads scored he said, "Take that Ref!"
It's like, "Dude, the Mooseheads are playing the Sags, not the Ref. No wonder the only people that seem to have any interest in you are all under the age of five."
When I used to go to Cape Breton Oilers games with my Dad, fans used to heckle Dan Currie, one of the Oilers most consistent scorers, by calling him an alcoholic. The abuse was pretty non-stop and incredibly personal, I wouldn't be surprised if it contributed to him never making the NHL.
Marc Laforge was another longtime Cape Breton Oiler. He ended up leaving the team and playing in sunnier climates. He gave an interview afterwards that disparaged the island, he said that he had just gathered up enough popsiciles sticks to build a raft before he was traded. He also stated that the movie theatre had only gotten around to showing Jaws, last month (this was in 1992).
The best thing about it all was that Laforge ended back in Cape Breton in a year's time and went from a fan favourite to just another whipping boy. I bet he developed a drinking problem some fast.
